Regeneration - ARCH 382
An experiential study in reframing and revival.
Will Hyunh and I renovated a 1962 remnant of modern reverence for brutalism, logic, and scientific rationality, into a safe space for BIPOC and home for Indigenous Science. Centering experiential knowledge of oppressed peoples was fundamental to our work, as the existing structure lacks experiential richness and multiformity.
We broke the existing rigid structural grid in order to create a diverse set of space for all ages, ethnicities, and backgrounds. With indigenous peoples in mind, we brought nature back in, physically and materially, to desettle the divide between culture and nature and embrace science as a variegated system of investigation.

Our programmatic and elevational development was informed by a regenerative urban plan. Our proposed urban design plan established a primary avenue of circulation in order to promote social encounters along our white oak greenway. The architecture is segmented in order to leave space for greenery and create a diverse set of experience as one navigates the space.
